Unca John is the O.A.R.S. mailroom supervisor, resident pop culture king, trivia bee champ and the king of Pez. He’s part Will Short and part Mary Tyler Moore. (He can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile). He will make sure you get your catalog and DVD and t-shirt, and he will help you plan an outstanding whitewater rafting vacation. John and his good friend, Larry the Gnome, frequently travel the U.S. in search of some of America’s finest, quirkiest attractions. As a follow-up to his previous post (“Big Middle West Trip”) he forwarded this…

John and his good friend, Larry the Gnome, frequently travel the U.S. in search of some of America’s finest, quirkiest attractions. Here is his report on his latest journey to the Midwest:
Day 1 – Flew into O’Hare from Reno and crashed at my aunt’s house in Darien. Grabbed my retired Uncle Jim (and of course my gnome, Larry) and went exploring in Chicagoland. Went to a muscle car shop, drove past Rev Wright’s church, found a big cigar-store Indian, a half-scale Leaning Tower of Pisa and a really cool Museum of Holography… Oh, yeah and the country’s first-ever McDonalds.
The daytime temps have fallen into the 60s/70s (from the mid-90s) recently here in Northern California. (Downright chilly in these parts.) Tioga Pass, the road through Yosemite National Park’s high country, is temporarily closed due to the snow. The commercial California whitewater rafting season is over. Makes sense to head south, doesn’t it?
O.A.R.S. offers three unique sea kayaking in Baja adventures:
You know those incredible people who helped you enjoy an unforgettable whitewater rafting experience this past summer? Yeah, those O.A.R.S. guides. Well, now that you’re back at work or in school or having some other grand adventure travel experience, your guides are heading home and/or to exotic locations around the globe.
Take for instance James Rodger, California/Oregon Regional Manager. After he oversees the O.A.R.S. Whitewater Rafting Gear Sale on October 25th, he will be heading to Chile to guide trips on the Futaleufú River.
Ashley Scanlan, who guides for O.A.R.S. sister company, ROAM, is heading south as well. (Coincidence? I think not.) Ashley will be guiding Galápagos trips. (…after a North American summer spent guiding trips on Alaska’s Tatshinshini River, a 16-day Mystical Peru multi-sport adventure, the Klinaklini River in British Columbia’s grizzly country, as well as a host of others.) Yeah, I want her life – I’m sure my dogs would understand.

Galápagos is home to many endemic animals, most of which are fearless because of their lack of natural predators. From the world’s only seagoing lizards to flightless cormorants and penguins, flamingos, inflatable frigate birds, wave albatrosses, clownish boobies and 13 species of Darwin finches, you can enjoy thrilling encounters with animals—up close—on any one of O.A.R.S.’ three Galápagos trips.
