Caring for our Wild Places

December 23, 2008.

O.A.R.S. is a staunch supporter of organizations who advocate for rivers and the environment, including Idaho Rivers United, Grand Canyon Trust, Friends of the River, American Whitewater, Hells Canyon Preservation Council and Leave No Trace.  In partnership with their guests, O.A.R.S. has contributed nearly $3,000,000 in donations and fees toward the preservation of the environment and to various conservation initiatives since the company was established in 1969.

O.A.R.S. leads a series of whitewater rafting and hiking trips in Utah, including:

Kathy Kilmer of The Wilderness Society contacted O.A.R.S. this morning to let us know that, "Cherished wild lands in Utah’s red rock canyon country, including Nine Mile Canyon and Desolation Canyon, may yet be saved from oil and gas drilling.  Just days after The Wilderness Society and six other conservation groups brought a lawsuit to protect 100,000 acres of wilderness quality lands from leasing, the BLM announced that, while it would sell the leases in these areas, it would temporarily halt the issuance of the leases until January 19 – the final full day of the Bush administration.  Yesterday, members of Congress called on President-Elect Obama to cancel the lease sales altogether.  Federal regulations are clear that the administration can cancel any lease it determines has been improperly issued."  The Wilderness Society’s mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places.
